What is a frappé coffee?

The frappé coffee owes is name to the way it is prepared. The term “frappé” is french and means “to shake” because the ingredients are usually mixed in a shaker to create a thin foam. Also called “Greek iced coffee”, this recipe combines the taste of coffee with fresh effect. But keep in mind: a  frappé coffee is not the same as an iced coffee.

coffee frappé

Why do we say “greek iced coffee” ?

The story goest that its inventor is a Nestlé employée who came to Greece during the International Exhibition in Thessaloniki in 1957. At that time, Nestlé wanted to sell chocolate drink to be prepared in a shaker. His reprentative couldn’t fint hot water for his coffee, so he thought of using the same technique by replacing the chocolate with coffee. A few decades later, the frappé coffee became a popular drink in Greece and Cyprys. This drink was then democratized in France during the Second World War. The real recipe of frappé coffee is prepared with instant coffee, water, sugar and sometimes milk. Depending on the amount of sugar, coffee or milk used, your frappé coffee will not be called the same, but the basic recipe remains the same. Try different options depending on your taste to find your perfect mix. The greek café latté is one of the simplest coffee recipes, In its original version, it is made without filter or coffee maker since the main ingredient is soluble coffee. In the version we propose, you will discover the frappé coffee with expresso.

Why the frappé coffee become so popular ?

Nowadays, most coffee shops offer the frappé à their menu. Its worldwide success is due to its simple recipe and, like all popular recipes, the changes that have emerged. The Frappuccino®, for example, became a registered trademark of Starbucks in 1995. This historic drink is often revisited, but first, we present the real recipe of frappé coffee, essential to master its variations.
