WHICH COFFEE SHOULD I CHOOSE FOR MY MOKA POT?

Have you just bought a Moka Pot? After almost a century of existence, the Moka Pot has become an iconic object, sometimes even exhibited in museums. But finding a coffee for a Moka Pot brew isn’t always easy.

CHARACTERISTICS OF MOKA POTS

It’s not easy choosing your type of coffee! Of course, the first thing to consider is your taste preferences. Some people prefer a strong, full-bodied coffee, like Italian coffee. Others prefer lighter coffees.

The colour of the roast will also be important in your choice of coffee for your Moka Pot. Dark or even very dark roasts are preferred, such as Italian coffees. They are fuller-bodied, with slightly roasted notes and rich flavours.

You can also try medium roasts, which bring out the body, aromas and length on the palate. On the other hand, light roasts are generally not suitable for Italian coffee makers.

Finally, it’s up to you whether you choose single origin such as 100% Arabica coffees, appreciated for their fine aroma, or Arabica/robusta blends, which are more powerful and have a pronounced bitterness.

WHAT TYPE OF GRIND SHOULD I USE FOR A MOKA POT?

Many people use a grind as fine as espresso (comparable to salt), which you can find in supermarkets. Unfortunately, this often results in an overly bitter coffee.

For the Moka Pot, you need to use a slightly coarser grind (between the espresso and filter grinds). This way, the water will take less time to pass through the coffee and you’ll get a much better result in your cup.

HOW DO YOU GRIND YOUR COFFEE FOR A MOKA POT?

First and foremost, you should remember that the best thing to do is to grind your coffee at the last minute. That way, you’ll get a freshly ground coffee with maximum aroma and greater flavour.

The advantage of a coarse grind for the Moka Pot is that you don’t need a high-precision coffee grinder to get started. Many grinders offer excellent value for money for this type of grind. You can use an electric or manual grinder.
