The best known? The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maxicoffee.com\/en-gb\/coffee-c-6.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coffee cherry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discovered in <\/span><strong>1819<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by the German chemist Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge, the molecule was named &#8220;Kaffein&#8221; as a chemical compound in coffee, and became the word we know today: &#8220;caffeine&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extracted from the seeds of the coffee tree, it is chemically identical to <\/span><strong>guaranin<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(extracted from guarana seeds), <\/span><strong>matein<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(contained in mate leaves) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maxicoffee.com\/en-gb\/tea-c-57\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>theine<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (found in tea). It is therefore<\/span> <strong>one and the same molecule<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the gross formula C8H10N4O2, with the same effects. Only the source changes!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>HOW LONG HAS CAFFEINE BEEN CONSUMED?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People have been consuming caffeine since the<\/span> <strong>Stone Age<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is known that the first peoples chewed the seeds, bark or roots of certain plants to temporarily reduce tiredness, or improve mood.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Popular legend attributes the discovery of coffee (and its effects) to a goat herder named Kaldi. He observed that his goats became euphoric and stayed awake all night after grazing on the leaves and fruits of coffee trees. When he tried the berries that the goats had eaten, he felt the same vitality.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF CAFFEINE?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Its benefits<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caffeine is believed to have many benefits. In humans, it acts as a <\/span><strong>stimulant for the central nervous system<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><strong>cardiovascular system<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It helps to <\/span><strong>reduce drowsiness<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or feelings of fatigue and to <\/span><strong>increase attention<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caffeine has short-lived effects, as it does not accumulate in the body. However, some people may be more sensitive to it than others. <\/span><strong>Pregnant women in particular are recommended to consume half as much caffeine in a day<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a normal adult. We will see a little later <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maxicoffee.com\/blog\/en-gb\/how-many-coffees-can-you-drink-per-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how much can be consumed per day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without risk.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It should be noted that caffeine is the most widely consumed psychoactive substance in the world. In North America, for example, 90% of adults use it daily. The <a href=\"https:\/\/britishcoffeeassociation.org\/coffee-consumption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UK coffee market<\/a> is mature: 98 million cups are consumed every day.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we have just seen, the caffeine contained in coffee has several <\/span><strong>benefits<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But it also presents risks if <\/span><strong>we consume too much<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-66485 size-large\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/what-is-caffeine-870x380.jpg\" alt=\"what is caffeine \" width=\"870\" height=\"380\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Its risks<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consuming this small molecule on a daily basis can have positive effects on our vitality or level of attention. However, too much caffeine can have undesirable effects on the body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sleep disturbances<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, irritability, difficulty in concentrating or increased heart rate are known effects that can occur in the short term.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><strong>risk of cardiovascular disease<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or delayed development of the foetus in pregnant women are effects that can occur in the long term.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>How much caffeine can you consume per day?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how much caffeine is recommended for an adult?\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) recommends not exceeding <\/span><strong>400 mg\/day for a healthy adult<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the equivalent of<\/span><strong> 3 cups of coffee<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This dosage should not exceed 200 mg for pregnant or breastfeeding women.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>HOW MUCH CAFFEINE IS IN A COFFEE?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-66487 size-large\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/caffeine-in-coffee-870x380.jpg\" alt=\"caffeine in coffee\" width=\"870\" height=\"380\" \/> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing you should know is that the caffeine content of coffee can vary considerably depending on the type of coffee bean, the different species of coffee plant and the method of preparation of the drink. Even beans from the same plant can differ in concentration depending on their position on the tree.<\/span> <strong>So which coffee contains the most caffeine?<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This can depend on the type of coffee and the amount of coffee. For example, the amount in a cup of Arabica coffee is about 40 mg for a 30 ml espresso, but about 90 mg for a 200 ml cup of filter coffee.<\/span> <strong>Heavily roasted coffee<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (like an Italian coffee) generally<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contains <\/span><strong>less<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as roasting reduces the caffeine content.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, Arabica normally contains less caffeine than Robusta (0.8 to 1.7% of the weight of the berry, compared to 1.5 to 4%).<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In summary, if you wish to consume coffee during the day, it is recommended that <\/span><strong>you do not exceed 5 espressos or 4 large cups of filter coffee per day<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and this before 3pm, to avoid experiencing stimulating effects too late in the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>IS THERE CAFFEINE IN OTHER DRINKS?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-66489 size-large\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/how-much-caffeine-in-coffee-870x380.jpg\" alt=\"how much caffeine in coffee\" width=\"870\" height=\"380\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we have seen above, this small molecule is present in many plants. This is why <\/span><strong>other drinks contain it: tea, some soft drinks and energy drinks<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><strong>cocoa<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, etc.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By way of comparison, a 220 ml cup of black tea contains 50 mg of caffeine (compared with 90 mg for filter coffee), while green tea contains less than black coffee, around 70 mg.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is interesting to know that tea contains more caffeine than coffee for the same weight. However, as generally less tea than coffee is used to prepare a cup, the proportion of caffeine is lower.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chocolate drinks or chocolate contain rather anecdotal amounts of caffeine if consumed in moderation.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soft drinks and energy drinks can contain up to 120 mg of caffeine per litre.<\/span><\/p>\n\n            <\/section>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"Container\" data-default-size=\"lg\" data-md-size=\"auto\" >\n    <section class=\"Text Wys \">\n        <p><strong>You now know a little more about this small molecule contained in your coffee<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!
