For this reason, most <\/span><b>coffee plants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are found in <\/span><b>tropical regions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Additionally, coffee plants need sufficient humidity and indirect light. Lastly, coffee is grown at <\/span><b>altitudes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of at least 200 meters above sea level to 2,400 meters, depending on variety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Coffee plants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> produce their first <\/span><b>fruits<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called <\/span><b>&#8220;cherries&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by growers and &#8220;drupes&#8221; by botanists within 3 to 5 years after sowing. Each plant can produce around 2,5 kilograms of fruit per year (depending on variety). This is equivalent to <\/span><b>between 500 g and 800 g of green coffee and<\/b> <b>between 350 g and 550 g of roasted coffee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This difference is due to the fact that coffee beans weigh 20% to 30% less after the roasting process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all <\/span><b>coffee fruits<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ripen at the same time. That\u2019s why the same shrub might need several pickings to harvest all the fruits at the right time. <\/span><b>Cherries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> generally <\/span><b>ripen in nine months<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Manual picking allows harvests of exceptional quality but can take up to three months! This method is called <\/span><b>\u201cstripping&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is very time consuming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the labor-intensive nature of this method, many coffee producers opt for <\/span><b>strip-picking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instead.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s cheaper as all the cherries are picked in one go. Coffee can also be harvested by machines for mass production: shrubs are shaken to make all the cherries fall, regardless of ripeness. This technique can only be used on flat terrain e.g. in <\/span><b>Brazil<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>Australia.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11302 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coffee-spirit.maxicoffee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/coffee-plant.jpg\" alt=\"cherry coffee plant\" width=\"1600\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coffee-spirit.maxicoffee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/coffee-plant.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/www.coffee-spirit.maxicoffee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/coffee-plant-300x131.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.coffee-spirit.maxicoffee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/coffee-plant-1024x448.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.coffee-spirit.maxicoffee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/coffee-plant-768x336.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.coffee-spirit.maxicoffee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/coffee-plant-1536x672.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/p>\n\n            <\/section>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"Container\" data-default-size=\"lg\" data-md-size=\"auto\" >\n    <section class=\"Text Wys \">\n        <h2><b>COFFEE VARIETIES WORLDWIDE\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are around <\/span><b>124 species of coffee <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but only<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maxicoffee.com\/blog\/en-gb\/arabica-vs-robusta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <b>2 are commonly cultivated<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><b>Coffea Arabica and Coffea Canephora (Robusta being its most commonly grown variety).<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They account for 95% of coffee consumed worldwide. <\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With its sweeter taste, Arabica makes up 60% of worldwide consumption and Canephora the remaining 40%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Where is Arabica coffee grown?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You now know that <\/span><b>Arabica coffee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the most popular in the world, but where are the beans grown? Coffea Arabica is native to Ethiopia, and more specifically to the forests of the Kaffa region.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Particularly fragile, this plant thrives in <\/span><b>mountainous areas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with deep, mineral-rich soils. The higher the altitude, the finer the aromas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why Arabica is often <\/span><b>grown at high altitude, between 1,500 and 2,400 meters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in a <\/span><b>reasonably warm climate (between 17 and 20 degrees<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Due to angled growing slopes, mountains guarantee natural fertilization, healthy air as well as low and constant irrigation. This type of landscape is ideal for the growth of Arabica coffee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><b>hundreds of Arabica varieties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the oldest of which are <\/span><b>Typica and Bourbon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many new strains are still being created and exported. These generate natural and artificial (i.e. man-made) hybrids. While hybridisation causes a drop in aromatic richness, it increases resistance to external aggressors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Where is Robusta coffee grown?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Canephora<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is native to <\/span><b>Guinea and Congo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This variety prefers <\/span><b>low-lying wetlands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but can still adapt to dry areas. Canephora plants are much more robust, hence the name of its most well-known variety \u201c<\/span><b>Robusta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>More resistant to disease and potentially more productive <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compared to Arabica, it is grown mainly in <\/span><b>Africa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Vietnam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These regions are less suitable for Arabica coffee production. Another key difference is that Robusta coffee beans grow in lowlands. They are smaller and rounder, and the resulting coffee has a higher caffeine content.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, there isn\u2019t any Grand Cru Robusta as this variety is mostly used for <\/span><b>blends<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Grand Cru coffees\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like wine, <\/span><b>coffee taste is heavily influenced by terroir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The French concept of &#8220;terroir\u201d encompasses several factors including location, soil type, humidity, shade and grape variety. Climate, soil and production sites are all parameters that will influence a coffee\u2019s notes and aromatic profile. In short: it changes the result in cup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different Crus with different aromatic notes are produced <\/span><b>within the same country or region<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> despite being similar environments.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crus are distinguished by their specific characteristics (acidity, bitterness, color, aroma, etc.), which are revealed during the tasting stage. In fact, <\/span><b>other parameters,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maxicoffee.com\/blog\/en-gb\/honey-process-pulped-or-lavado-discover-other-coffee-processing-methods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">processing methods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>impact your coffee taste.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some coffees, like<\/span><b> Jamaica\u2019s<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maxicoffee.com\/en-eu\/blue-mountain-coffee-c-6_996.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Blue Mountain<\/b><\/a><b> or Hawaii\u2019s Kona are premium coffees<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with very expensive price tags<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are various ways of doing this. The most well-known processes are the <\/span><b>wet method <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the <\/span><b>dry method<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, over the years, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maxicoffee.com\/blog\/en-gb\/honey-process-pulped-or-lavado-discover-other-coffee-processing-methods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new methods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (or processes) have appeared: <\/span><b>semi-washed, <\/b><b><i>reposado<\/i><\/b><b>, <\/b><b><i>honey, wet-hulled<\/i><\/b><b>, anaerobic,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and many others. Each influences coffee flavour, which is why you can usually find this information on your packet of coffee beans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The dry method<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dry method, also called natural process, involves <\/span><b>washing the cherries in water<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in order to<\/span><b> remove impurities added during harvesting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (stones, sand, branches and bad fruit). Cherries are then hand-picked and spread out to dry in the sun.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green beans, which are unroasted raw beans, are then sorted according to size and the number of batch defects, either manually or by machine. They are kept with their parchment layer (the shell enveloping the green coffee bean) until export. This <\/span><b>keeps the humidity level between 9 and 12%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The washed method<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This method, like the dry method, <\/span><b>involves washing the fruit to remove impurities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After that first step cherries are passed through a pulping machine. Depulped beans are held and regularly stirred in <\/span><b>fermenting tanks for 24 to 48 hours<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Finally, after a last washing, beans are laid to dry either on the ground or on raised beds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some countries, and depending on the variety, beans may be covered to protect them against bad weather, droughts and humidity. A cover protects them from external hazards. Market prices are determined by the London Stock Exchange for Robusta while New York Stock Exchange trades Arabica coffees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Coffee-producing countries<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ever wonder where coffee grows? There are many producer countries in the world but not all of them produce the same varieties. <\/span><b>Brazil<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the world\u2019s largest producer of Arabica and Robusta in the world. Annual production is 58 million bags (60 kilograms per bag). <\/span><b>Not far behind, there is<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XYroArV05zI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Colombia<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who only produce Arabica at 14 million bags.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is also the case of <\/span><b>Venezuela<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with 650,000 bags of Arabica grown by small-scale producers. <\/span><b>Peru<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> produces 3.8 million bags of Arabica coffee. Peruvian beans are mainly used for flavored coffees and exported to the US.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ethiopia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the birthplace of Arabica coffee, produces 7,2 million bags. Other notable countries include <\/span><b>Costa Rica<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with 1,5 million bags and <\/span><b>El Salvador<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with 661 thousand bags. Finally, <\/span><b>Jamaica<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> produces one of the world\u2019s most famous and expensive coffees, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maxicoffee.com\/en-gb\/blue-mountain-coffee-c-6_996.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue Mountain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With only 23 thousand bags, Jamaica is able to produce an exceptional Cru.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Other countries chose to diversify production and now grow both Robusta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Arabica. This includes <\/span><b>Guatemala<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with 3,6 million bags. <\/span><b>Mexico<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> produces 4 million bags, while <\/span><b>India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> produces 5 million.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How is fairtrade coffee produced?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 1962 to 1989, the coffee market was regulated with a quota per country system. Now liberalized, it unfortunately suffers from:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>overproduction;<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>quality deterioration;<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>stagnating consumption<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the expense of small producers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maxicoffee.com\/en-gb\/fair-trade-coffee-c-6_1225.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Fairtrade coffee<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was created to help <\/span><b>small-scale farmers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> break out of this vicious cycle by offering fair prices for their coffee beans as well as long-term partnerships. Roasters who choose fair trade coffee support these farmers, ensuring them <\/span><b>decent living conditions.
